Today, Peter Borup, President of Lauritzen Bulkers (pictured at the far right), chaired a session on dry bulk shipping at the annual Coaltrans World Coal Conference in Copenhagen.

For Lauritzen Bulkers, the Coaltrans conference is a great opportunity to meet with clients and other players in the coal industry and to enhance our visibility in the supramax segment.

The session chaired by Peter Borup focused on "How is dry bulk shipping changing as it heads towards recovery?" The discussions revolved around e.g. ‘eco-ships’, overinvestment and structural oversupply, demographic of ship supply, high demand growth but low markets, expectations on China as a coal importer, reflections on consolidation in the bulk industry and drivers of same.

There were obviously some very interesting discussions due to the fact that much of the dry cargo community takes part in the World Coal Conference,” said Peter Borup after the session and added “Coal and iron ore are the two dominant commodities for the dry cargo markets and whether directly or indirectly, the development in tonne miles of the global coal trade has a very significant impact on our markets.” Last year 10-12% of the cargo volumes carried by Lauritzen Bulkers were coal or energy related commodities.

The annual Coaltrans World Coal Conference is an international conference that attracts the global coal industry’s top executives and provides top-level roundtable discussions and an exhibition. The conference is attended by all major coal producers, importers, shippers and traders with close to 2,000 participants.
